EKD Emphasise Importance of Religious Freedom

"Iranian law on Apostasy unacceptable"

September 25, 2008

Martin Schindehuette, Bishop for foreign affairs and ministries abroad of the Evangelical Church in Germany, is very concerned regarding the new Iranian law, which threaten individuals renouncing Islam with punishment by death. "This law is completely unacceptable and makes a mockery of all principles of a respectful relationship amongst religions." The Guardian Council has still to testify the law that passed the Iranian Parliament on 9 September. "I can only hope that this regulation will not come in force", said Schindehuette. "This law means a fundamental violation of human rights."

Schindehuette pointed to the fact that the action of Iranian authorities against the religious community of Baha'i and against Muslims having renounced Islam has already caused strong fear during the first months of this year what is now confirmed by the law. The bishop adds: "After the final adoption of the law on apostasy things might look still worse."

Such a discriminating legislation can lead to a situation that not only state-run authorities in Iran will take action against converts but also a general atmosphere of abasement and condemnation can spread in which also unauthorized persons and religious groups feel legitimated to infringements of rights and acts of violence. Furthermore this could also have effects on the Christian churches which enjoyed tolerance so far. "It is understandable that one groups aims to distinguish itself as a religious community. This must not lead to curtail the religious freedom of others and their religious congregations in such a massive way. They must also be granted the right to live their identity." Bishop Schindehuette pointed to the Universal Declaration of Human Right of the United Nations and warned Iran not to move still further away from the international community of states and the common basic principles of societies.
