PRESS STATEMENT by United Church Council - Namibia Evangelical Lutheran Churches

June 12, 2009

Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil (Psalms 141:4)

The United Church Council - Namibia Evangelical Lutheran Churches (UCC - NELC), which met in Otjiwarongo on 11th June 2009, is shocked and dismayed by the recent brutal killings in Omaruru, Outjo, Okahandja and Otavi. In the last days and weeks, the Namibian society witnessed several brutal acts of violence and murder against innocent victims. We are still in shock and speechless by these acts and our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims. May our LORD give you strength and himself wipe your tears during these difficult times of anger, despair and mourning. Be assured that we stand together with you in this shock and the bereavement.

The motives for committing these acts might be jealousy or greed, but in most cases the reasons are only known to the murderers themselves. Whatever the motives are, the acts constitute a crime against GOD and humanity. Such evil actions cannot be comprehended and they shake the very foundation of our society. The society has become sick. Such senseless brutality bears witness of a society where there is no compassion for the life and existence of others. It is a society where people go about life as in a play-station, where somebody attempts to score, for a cellphone, for a little money, but where you find nothing except that perpetrators and the society which harbours them lose their soul, lose their very existence. As if there is no GOD. Together with the people murdered GOD himself is spit in his face, trampled upon, brutally and senselessly murdered.

In Isaiah 26:19 & 21 we are told:

But your dead will live; their bodies will rise.
The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her,
she will conceal her slain no longer.

Such brutality will not be concealed! The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her. And this is not something of a distant future, but it judges us as society here and now. Let us not be drawn to evil but bring about justice! Let us not be drawn to evil but say no to an unjust society, which is ruled by intolerance and indifference to other people's lives! Let us not be drawn to evil, but have compassion in the name of the living GOD!

We implore our Government Institutions and all the Law Enforcement Agencies to leave no stone unturned in the search for bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such heinous crimes are routed out from amongst our society.
