EKD Council Chair Shocked by Attack Against Egyptian Christians
January 01, 2011
Hanover (epd). The chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) Nikolaus Schneider expressed shock over the bombing attack against a Christian congregation in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. "My compassion and my prayers go out to the families of the victims," Schneider told epd on Saturday. He hoped that this attack would not spur further violence "for 2011 cannot be a year of Christian persecution."
At least 21 persons were killed in the attack on a Coptic church on New Year's Eve, while over 40 were wounded. Schneider reminded Christians and Muslims that they can only fulfill the will of God by together striving to achieve peace in the world. The biblical watchword for 2011 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Ro 12:21) can serve as a reliable guide in this regard.
