September 11: EKD Council Chair Warns Against Religious Fanaticism

September 09, 2011

Düsseldorf (epd). On the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Council chair of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) Nikolaus Schneider warned against religious fanaticism. Schneider said in Düsseldorf that, for him, September 11 had become a clarion call to all religions to reject elements that legitimize violence. Religion must not become an instrument for political aims. Rather, we must, inspired by our own faith, emphasize, proclaim and demonstrate by the way we live the peaceful nature of this faith.

Schneider, who is the provost [Präses] of the Evangelical Church in Rhineland, further said that the 9/11 terrorist attack had changed the world.   The attack had been interpreted as an attack on free society. For Schneider, religious fanaticism and fundamentalism, as well as the clash of cultures and religions, had become recurrent topics.

He felt that this event had made clear that religion unites people inwardly. "This bond is a strength, but, as the events of September 11 have shown, it can also be a weakness." Many local worship services on Sunday, according to reports, will include a commemoration of the terrorist attacks.
