Bishop Bohl Presents Reconciliation Sculpture in Coventry

April 18, 2012

As a symbol of genuine reconciliation and partnership, the Dresden Frauenkirche Foundation is going to present the English cathedral in Coventry with a sculpture. The work by sculptor Helmut Heinze will be officially presented in Coventry by a delegation led by the bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony Jochen Bohl, the foundation announced on Tuesday. Bohl is the chair of the foundation's board of trustees. The sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled to the public on April 26.

Bohl indicated that the Dresden Frauenkirche and Coventry Cathedral shared both their common history of destruction and reconstruction, and their quest for reconciliation and peace. The early 15th-century cathedral was nearly totally destroyed during an air attack by the Luftwaffe on November 14, 1940. Volunteers from Action Reconciliation in 1961 built in the undercroft of the destroyed cathedral an international gathering place for reconciliation. A new, modern cathedral was erected next to the remains of the former church and was consecrated on May 25, 1962.
