Churches call for better protection for refugees
September 19, 2016
Brussels (epd). On the occasion of the UN refugee summit in New York, the World Council of Churches and Europe's churches have called for peaceful solutions for armed conflicts. Wars are one of the main causes of the global refugee crisis, according to a joint call published in Brussels by the World Council of Churches, the Churches Commission on Migrants in Europe, Act Alliance and Churches Witnessing With Migrants.
In their statement the organisations add that, at the summit, the countries should commit to a better protection of refugees. Moreover, the church organizations call for better care for victims of displacement - many of them should be resettled, they advise. Heads of state and government of the 193 member states of the United Nations will come together on 19 September for the first major UN summit on the issue of refugees and migration.
US President Barack Obama is hosting another refugee summit at the UN on 20 September. Federal chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will not attend either event. German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) and development minister Gerd Müller (CSU) will represent the German government.
The WCC has about 350 member churches, while the Conference of European Churches has 114 member churches. The Catholic Church does not belong to either organisation.
