2009 "WebFish" Awards Launched

Thirteenth Best Christian Web Content Competition

October 6, 2008

For the 13th consecutive year, the EKD 2009 "WebFish" Awards competition has been launched.   This coveted trophy is awarded jointly by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and the Protestant Association for Media Communication (GEP) to honor the Web site content in German or English presenting Christian faith in the most modern and most original fashion. Contestants have until 31 December to submit their applications online at www.webfish.de.

Thousands of Christian Web sites are accessible on the Internet. Since 1996, the best among them have been distinguished with the award's logo, a winking fish. Winners also receive money prizes and gifts. The decision is made by a jury of specialists.

In January 2009, the jury will select ten nominees. Selection criteria are design, informational content, technical realization and interactivity. Special consideration is given to barrier-free content offering everyone unrestricted access to information. Beginning in February, Internet users can vote online for one of the nominees and thus participate in designating the winners of the award.

First prize is a gold WebFish and 1,500 euros in cash. The second place winner receives a silver WebFish and 1,000 euros in cash, and third prize is a bronze WebFish and 500 euros. There are two additional prizes, the   WebFish for "Innovation" - sponsored by the Protestant Credit Society of Kassel - and the WebFish "Special Prize," each of which is worth 500 euros.

Around 150 applicants from Germany and abroad took part in the WebFish competition in 2008. The goal of EKD and GEP in granting the award is to give recognition to outstanding sites on the World Wide Web and to promote Christian presence on the Internet.  Since the awards have existed, they have drawn a total of 2,500 Web site applicants.
