October 28, 2009
For the first time in its history, the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) has elected a woman as Chairperson of the EKD Council.
In Ulm on Wednesday 28 October, the EKD Synod and Church Conference elected Margot Kässmann, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover, to succeed Wolfgang Huber, by a clear majority. Kässmann obtained 132 of the 142 votes cast. Nikolaus Schneider, Praeses of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland, was elected deputy chairperson.
The Synod and Church Conference had already agreed that a 15th member would be elected to the EKD Council at the third meeting of the Eleventh EKD Synod, to be held on 7-11 November 2010 in Hanover.
