New EKD Council elected

Fourteen Council members chosen after 12 rounds of voting

The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) has a newly elected Council. After a voting procedure of nearly 15 hours the members oft he 11th Synod oft he EKD as well as the leaders of the 22 member churches of the EKD elected the new Council for the next 6 years on Tuesday, 27 October in the city of Ulm. 12 ballots were necessary for the election of 14 members of the Council.

The first candidate to be elected into the Council by the 145 voters was the Rt.Rev. Dr. Margot Käßmann, Bishop oft he Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover. She obtained 103 votes in the first ballot which was clearly more than the required two-thirds majority.

The Council of the EKD shall be composed oft he following members:

  1.  Jochen Bohl, Bischop of the Lutheran Church of Saxony, Dresden
  2. Tabea Dölker, Kindergarten teacher, Holzgerlingen
  3. Dr. Elke Eisenschmidt, Mathematician, Magdeburg
  4. Dr. Ulrich Fischer, Bishop of the Protestant Church of Baden, Karlsruhe
  5. Dr. Johannes Friedrich, Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bavaria, Munich
  6. Dr. Margot Käßmann, Bishop of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Hanover, Hannover
  7. Uwe Michelsen, Journalist, Hamburg
  8. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki, General Secretary of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM), Wuppertal
  9. Jann Schmidt, Church President of the Reformed Church, Leer
  10. Nikolaus Schneider, President of the Evangelical Church of the Rhineland, Düsseldorf
  11. Marlehn Thieme, Director (Deutsche Bank AG), Bad Soden
  12. Gesine Weinmiller, Architect, Berlin
  13. Klaus Winterhoff, Legal Officer and Vice-President of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia, Bielefeld,
  14. As well as the President of the EKD-Synod:
