Welcome to the web pages of the
Student Christian Movement of the Federal Republic of Germany (in German Evangelische StudentInnen-Gemeinde in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bundes-ESG).
“The ESG is the congregation of Jesus Christ at the university level.... The ESG is an ecumenical congregation, seeking encounters with different cultures, religions and denominations, on its way to ecumenical learning. The ESG is open to all who work toward the realization of its goals.” (from the statute of the ESG)
As umbrella organization for approximately 150 Christian and/or ecumenical student and university congregations (ESGn, HSGn) from various German universities, which are either autonomous or integrated in the regional church, we offer national and international events and functions as well as assistance in the students’ administrative committees.
The ESG supports the work of the student congregations as well with seminars, training and services. Depending on the universities, these student congregations enjoy a more or less cheerful congregational life. In our office in Berlin student activities are planned and networks created. The work of the ESG on the national level is directed toward all student congregations, calls for cooperation and offers them a seat in the general assembly. Even at the national level, the students decide the perspective and structure of their own work, which positions will be filled and who will represent the ESG and at which level.
The ESG is part of the university system and part of the church system. As such, the ESG can mediate between the two institutions, accompany their development and encourage the discussion of topics which generally receive too little attention at universities: academic ethics and educational policy, life of a Christian in the university labyrinth. The ESG also draws people who normally have no contact with the church: students who are still trying to find their way in life, university students between graduation and their first job experience.
To accommodate the rapid turnover at the universities, the ESG designs its program as flexible as possible. In the process, the outline of various dialogs becomes noticeable: the critical discourse between theology and faith, theology and other sciences, women and men.
The ESG is one of the founding members of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) and is actively cooperating with the member organisation within this structure. The ESG has a strong international focus – on the one hand we are organizing international events, but on the other hand we also try to support German students in going abroad and we have an ingoing scholarship programme for students from developing countries.
