| Philipp Schwarzerdt was born on February 16, 1497 in Bretten, located in Palatine. He was the first of five children of a local armourer. Only later, under the influence of his teacher and great uncle Johann Reuchlin, a major German Humanist, Philipp changed his name into the humanist name of "Melanchthon" (Greek for "Schwarzerdt", *black soil*). | |

The father, Georg Schwarzerdt, was not just any armourer but responsible for the armoury of the count palatine, after who he named his son "Philipp". Melanchthon's mother Barbara was descended from the wealthy and educated merchant family Reuter. His grandfather took care that the little Philipp received a thorough education among other in Latin, the classical language of education and the law. Philipp received his education through a private tutor. |
| When in 1508 first his father and then his grandfather died, private tutoring by Philipp's tutor Johannes Unger ended. Melanchthon then went to the Latin school in Pforzheim, where he was also educated in Greek, before he started his university studies in Heidelberg in 1509. | |
