The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, visited Germany last year because of the Reformation anniversary. Now Präses Irmgard Schwaetzer and Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm are in London. Justin Welby has invited them.
On 29 August a commemorative service is taking place in Berlin to mark the return to Namibia of the mortal remains of Herero and Nama dating from the colonial period. The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) are holding the service in the Französische Friedrichstadtkirche.
With a festive service in the historical Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam the World Council of Churches today celebrates its 70th anniversary and returns to the place where it was founded. There are numerous representatives from the international ecumenical movement. The Evangelical Church in Germany is represented by Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, chair of the EKD Council.
With an urgent appeal to allow sea rescue to work again , Präses Manfred Rekowski, chair of the advisory commission on migration and integration of the Evangelical Church in Germany, concluded his visit to Malta. He called on governments and political leaders in Europe to stop breaking international law and criminalising civilian rescuers of persons in distress at sea.
